What’s current?
- Current edition: NEN 1010:2020+C1:2024, with substantive corrections and editorial improvements.
- The Dutch Building Decree (Bbl) references NEN 1010; always verify the currently designated version/amendment for design and handover.
- New NPR 5310:2024 (practice guideline) with updated chapters on earthing & bonding and a reinstated part 51.
- EV/PV: consider DC residual currents → apply suitable RCD (Type B or Type A + 6 mA DC detection per manufacturer/standard); dedicate a final circuit, 30 mA RCD, ensure selectivity.
Design & installation
Select cables/conduits, protective devices, voltage drop and switchgear to suit use and environment.
- Indicative voltage drop targets (project dependent): ~3% lighting, ~≤5% other loads.
- Size conductors for permissible current, ambient temperature and installation method.
- Clear schematics, circuit schedules and labelling.
When does NEN 1010 apply in practice?
- For new installations, extensions, distribution board replacement, additional circuits, EV chargers, PV installations and major alterations.
- Commissioning checks cover circuit layout, protective devices, earthing/bonding, conductor sizing, voltage drop, disconnection conditions and labelling.
- A handover file shows what was designed, installed, measured and what remains as an advisory item.
- NEN 1010 is not a standalone maintenance checklist for existing installations; NEN 3140 covers operation and periodic inspection.
Protection & safety
- Earthing and RCD/RCBO selection (type A/AC/B or A with DC detection depending on application).
- Special locations (wet areas), SELV/PELV where required, fire-rated penetrations.
- Prove selectivity and disconnection times (loop impedance/trip time).
Testing & handover
Visual checks and measurements/tests (insulation, PE continuity, earth resistance, RCD test, loop impedance) with a handover dossier.
